On 16 May Coeliac UK mark International Coeliac Awareness Day - an important moment to come together to raise awareness of coeliac disease, help more people recognise the symptoms, and encourage those affected to take the first step towards diagnosis.

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting around 1 in 100 people in the UK. Yet an estimated 64% of people living with the condition remain undiagnosed. That means over half a million people could be living with ongoing symptoms such as fatigue, stomach pain, brain fog or anaemia without knowing the cause - and it could be coeliac disease.

Coeliac UK works hard to raise awareness of the symptoms of coeliac disease, provide advice on how to get diagnosed, and make sure the wider community understand the importance of the gluten free diet for those affected.

Is it coeliac disease

Coeliac disease can be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are wide ranging and can also be similar to other conditions.

It currently takes an average of 13 years for an adult to be diagnosed with coeliac disease. We are working to change this so people get the right help sooner.

Coeliac UK have a free self assessment which helps you to determine whether you should be tested for coeliac disease. They will send you an email with a summary of your results, so you can talk it through with your GP.
